DURIAN DAUN - More than 200 people from 40 families from two villages here were relocated to a flood-relief centre after their homes were affected by a flash flood on Monday.The relief-centre, which utilizes the hall of Sekolah Kebangsaan Perempuan Durian Daun, was opened at 2.00 pm and it was the first flood-relief centre to be rendered operational in Melaka.Those relocated to the centre were from Kampung Durian Daun Dalam and Kampung
Pengkalan Rama Tengah. Duyong assemblyman, Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the flood-relief centre was opened after the flood situation at the two villages worsened.He said the authorities will continue to monitor the situation at the villages and will initiate appropriate action if the situation requires."The number of those relocated may increase if heavy rain continues later today," he told reporters when met at the centre.Apart from Kampung Durian Daun Dalam, the other areas in the Duyong constituency which were also affected by the flash flood were Bukit Serindit, Taman Desa Duyong and Bukit Cina.According to Gan, who is also State Public Works and Utilities committee chairman, the SK Perempuan Durian Daun school-hall can accommodate up to 100 people at any one time.He said that if the number of victims increases, the hall of Sekolah Rendah Bukit Cina will be used as a flood-relief centre."We will be handing out food, drinks, blankets and mattresses to those seeking shelter at this relief-centre," he added.Earlier, Gan also took the opportunity to have a closer look at the houses in Kampung Durian Daun Dalam which were affected by the flood.During his brief tour of the area, he was also briefed by local residents on sudden flooding.
